IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH IN UNIVERSITY MALAYA

No matter what you tell them, no matter how you may want to convince them, they would say go and fly kite. They didnt say that, but from the attitude and response, I assume, that was their response.

Why do they responded that way and why are we not able to convince them? [1] Somebody might have told them Japan, Korea, and many others can succeed using their own language, why cant we? My answer....look at their culture, their cultural diversity, their language structure, politic, economic, social etc. The status of Bahasa Melayu at this point in time is focussing in certain sectors and activities only. Please fight on slowly, in stages and with a very systematic approach. Everybody will support you. [2] Please look at the whole picture and situation with an open mind and open heart. Berpijak di bumi nyata. Globalisation is here to stay, whether we like it or not. Globalisation was here since the British times. They came with F&N, lever brother, sime darby, guthrie etc. Mydin didnt go oversea to do international business, but Mydin changed. Mydin of today is very different. It competes with international players in its own country. That is why, we need to leatn English, write English and speak English. We need this to survive. Mydin changed because it need to survive. Not because it want to do business like Tesco or Makro or Carrefour. [3] Nik Aziz can speak 9 (nine) languages. He is still Nik Aziz. A very respected individual.

In short, we need to speak English so that we are marketable. If your parents are rich and job is waiting for you, by all means, you dont even need to come to UM.
